Analyst ReportCollaboration Services Roadmap 2025 – Stay with Safe Choices
- Microsoft’s key collaboration services, Teams and SharePoint, remain a safe destination for customers.
- Other areas, like Viva and project management, are in flux with uncertain futures.
- Customers should evaluate collaboration offerings with a long-term view and understand where the risks are.
Microsoft’s collaboration offerings focus on a variety of activities ranging from virtual workspaces that offer discussions, content sharing, and telephony to large-scale project management and activity tracking. These offerings, which are primarily cloud based but also have some on-premises components, are classified based on their scope (one-to-one, team-level, organization-level). Customers planning for the long term should consider the core services, Teams and SharePoint, as well as Viva employee experience (EXP) modules, as the safest choices. Loop and Microsoft Lists are relatively new and should be adopted slowly as they mature. Customers in need of more formal project management collaboration should focus on Planner, although Microsoft has struggled to provide a consistent roadmap for this area and the future may change.
