  • Copilot for Power BI and Fabric provides a natural language interface to generate code, analyze data, and perform other BI developer tasks.
  • The preview copies data outside of an organization environment and potentially its country, which could violate internal data governance or local law.
  • The preview is only available for customers with expensive, high-end Fabric or Power BI deployments.

(Update: Apr. 17, 2024 – Microsoft removed the 30-day data retention requirement when processing requests.)

Copilot for Power BI and Microsoft Fabric, in preview, provides a natural language interface where developers can ask it to write code, analyze data for insights, and do other low-level tasks. The biggest concern with the preview is that Copilot processes data through the Azure OpenAI service, which means customer data is transferred and stored outside of their control and potentially outside of their geographic region, which may violate internal or national data compliance rules. Copilot is only available for high-end, expensive Power BI Premium P and Fabric F64 deployments. Using Copilot does not require separate User Subscription Licenses (User SLs), but it uses a consumption formula that deducts usage from a deployment’s compute capacity. Performance problems are unlikely, but customers should limit Copilot for Power BI and Microsoft Fabric use until its effect is fully understood.
