  • Azure Database Migration Service provides tools and processes for automating large database moves to Azure services.
  • DMS can reduce the unique costs and risks of database migration, which can be comparable to the problems of translating the application code.
  • The newer DMS version, previously limited to Azure Data Studio, is now available in traditional Azure tools, and will replace the older version while operating in parallel over the next three years.

Azure Database Migration Service (DMS) provides tools and processes to migrate databases from SQL Server and other database products to Azure database services. DMS can automate the transfer for data, translation of schemas, and creation of user logins and server roles for large or complex migrations that otherwise might impose high costs in staff time, bandwidth, and potentially disrupt business. However, DMS itself is migrating from an older to a new service, and customers using the older (DMS classic) service should plan to redeploy some projects by early 2026. (For more background on DMS, see the sidebar “Database Migration Service Overview”.)
