  • Azure Database Migration Service provides analysis, computing, and scheduling to assist in migrating databases to Azure services.
  • It is not fully automated but can help with complex applications, where multiple databases must be migrated together.
  • Support for SQL Database Managed Instance enables migration to a more reasonable destination for complex applications.
  • The service is expanding to migrate databases from open source software to comparable Azure destinations.

Azure Database Migration Service (DMS) is Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offering that provides computing resources, orchestration features, documentation, and assessment and testing tools to guide customers through the process of migrating databases to Azure destinations.

Service Overview

At the core of the service are migration projects. Customers can create projects and select and schedule the migration of multiple databases in a project. As compared to migrating databases manually, automated projects are particularly beneficial for recurring migrations or complex applications that contain multiple databases working in concert that must be moved together.
