Azure Cosmos DB is a hosted NoSQL (not only SQL) database service that provides multiple nonrelational data models and comes with global scaling and performance features that can support large-scale, data-intensive applications. The service, previously called DocumentDB, received a significant update that added more data models and new scaling and consistency features to support a wider range of applications. The service will most likely interest customers who need the scale-out and distribution features and guaranteed performance. New data models are in preview and existing customers on lower tiers will need to select new performance levels, but costs will not increase.

DocumentDB Renamed Cosmos DB

Azure Cosmos DB began life as Azure DocumentDB where it provided a hosted NoSQL database management platform, based on JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) documents. DocumentDB was originally designed for cross-platform Web and mobile applications that need a flexible data schema and advanced scaling capabilities.
