Dynamics 365 for Unified Operations (previously named Dynamics AX) is an on-premises version intended to replace the longstanding AX 2012 R3 version. It introduces new deployment options that should benefit distributed organizations. However, it currently lacks numerous key features and is a significant rewrite of the product that will require recoding customizations and replacing add-on products. Therefore, it may appeal to a narrow set of new customers. Most existing customers will likely take advantage of the longer support periods for previous versions and delay upgrades until the new product matures.

On-Premises Version Released

Dynamics 365 for Unified Operations is Microsoft’s enterprise resource planning (ERP) product aimed at multinational midmarket companies and enterprises. (For an overview, see the sidebar “Dynamics 365 Unified Operations Overview“.)

The on-premises successor to AX 2012 R3 was released in June 2017 under the name “Dynamics 365 for Unified Operations July 2017 Update,” also known to administrators as version 7.2.
