Azure HDInsight is Microsoft’s hosted Hadoop service based on Apache’s Hadoop software framework, a popular solution for Big Data storage and analysis. The service provides multiple deployment configurations optimized for specific workloads that simplify deployment and a scalable environment that requires less upfront investment than a similar on-premises deployment. Storage and computing resources are charged independently to allow customers to maintain a data repository at a steady rate and deploy computing resources as needed to meet demand. However, data ingestion is not part of the service, and managing a Hadoop environment requires specialized skills.
