SQL Server 2014 became generally available on Apr. 1, 2014, with new and improved features in almost all areas of the database engine and management tools. Substantial changes to the database engine significantly improve database and query performance for a wide range of business uses, such as internal line-of-business applications, data warehouses, and high-volume transaction processes. New management features simplify the use of Azure services for database hosting, reporting, and backup. However, some new features have compatibility limitations that may hinder their adoption, and not all databases are good candidates for upgrading.
