Analyst ReportJSON Features Support Mobile Applications
SQL Server 2016 includes functionality that supports full management of JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) documents, including receiving, storing, parsing, and querying. Support for JSON fills an import feature gap, as compared to competitors, and addresses the growing use of JSON for Web and mobile applications. The improvements allow organizations to access JSON data sources for analysis and reporting, as well as format and share SQL Server relational data for use in JSON-based applications. The new functionality is compatible with most existing SQL Server features, allowing organizations to leverage existing skills; however, it will require application changes and new database management skills.
JSON Overview
JSON is a popular data exchange format, based on self-describing data objects called documents, also referred to as semi-structured data. It encodes data in a format based on the syntax of the JavaScript programming language. JavaScript encoding makes JSON particularly well-suited to Web and mobile applications, because data in the JSON format can be consumed more easily from within JavaScript code. JSON is also used in other applications that need a flexible data schema and the ability to store data on multiple OSs and devices.
