An update to the Lync Windows Store application (for devices running either the Windows 8, 8.1, or RT OSs) in the first quarter of 2014 provides new functionality and management controls that bring the free-to-download application closer to parity with the Lync desktop client.

Shown here is the application with two screens, taken from a Windows 8.1 device, in a Lync conference. The top image shows the controls presenters have to manage remote attendees, which include the ability to invite new participants, mute all attendees, and admit attendees waiting in the lobby. Presenters can also send private instant messages and promote or demote users between presenter and attendee status. Such functionality is currently available in the Lync desktop client.

The bottom image shows the controls for the Meet Now feature, an important and frequently used function in the Lync desktop client. Meet Now allows users to create an impromptu meeting (without having scheduled a meeting in advance) that can include one or multiple attendees; however, unlike the desktop client, with the Windows Store application users cannot escalate a current conversation (voice, video, or chat) to an impromptu meeting with the Meet Now feature.
