Analyst ReportMicrosoft Fabric’s Initial Roadmap – Dec. 2023
Microsoft Fabric has many plans for the individual components (experiences and OneLake), after reaching general availability in Nov. 2023. Most of the plans are designed to either complete the experiences (such as Synapse Data Warehousing and Data Activator) or bring the experiences up to parity with their original services (such as Data Explorer and Synapse Data Engineering). Additionally, all the experiences will start receiving new features that are unique to Fabric and do not make it back to the previous services. The most notable examples are Purview controlled data governance and the preview of numerous Fabric Copilots (AI assistants) that work in the various experiences to help developers write code, queries, and pipelines. These chat-based AI assistants are embedded into the Fabric UI and will likely only be available in Fabric.
High-level plans for the individual experiences and OneLake include the following:
Synapse Data Science is previewing an automatic link to Power BI, called semantic link, that allows a data scientist to analyze Power BI data (semantic models) in-place, removing the need to copy data and rebuild dimensional data. Data Science also gets improved data wrangling features, provide pretrained models for use with Azure AI Services, updates to the Fabric SDK, and GIT integration.
