Moving on-premises or online workloads to the Azure online service is easier with a new migration tool, currently in preview. Migration Accelerator is based on technology acquired with InMage in Sept. 2014. It can help customers move workloads from physical servers and move VMware, Amazon Web Services, and Hyper-V virtual machines (VMs) into Azure. The service is available through the Azure portal and can automatically discover workloads remotely, enabling administrators to automate migrations. Migration Accelerator supports migrating multitier applications (such as applications that use database back ends) so that they will run the same in Azure as they do on the source system.

Several Servers Involved

Migration Accelerator helps automate discovery and migration of workloads to Azure. After an initial replication of a VM to Azure, Migration Accelerator continuously replicates the VM using in-memory change tracking, a key piece of the InMage technology that places no additional disk I/O load on production servers. All data can be compressed (saving network bandwidth) and encrypted (for protection) as it flows to Azure. Migration Accelerator can be configured to discover workloads and provision Azure replica VMs as needed.
