  • Power BI is now part of Microsoft Fabric and will act like it, or else.
  • Three high-end Power BI license types are being retired this year, forcing customers to eventually redeploy using Fabric.
  • Planned Power BI updates continue to address performance, security, and client changes, but at a slower pace.
  • AI, in the form of Copilot for Power BI, is in preview with more improvements planned.

Plans for Power BI, Microsoft’s business intelligence (BI) cloud service, have been taken over by plans for Microsoft Fabric, a larger data, analytics, and reporting platform that includes Power BI. Three licenses—Power BI Premium P, Power BI Premium EM, and Azure Power BI Embedded— will drop off Microsoft price lists Jan. 1, 2025, which will force customers to eventually replace them with Fabric licenses and migrate Power BI workloads to Fabric capacities. Judging from recent developments and announcements, the Power BI service will still receive updates for performance and developer activities, although most updates are focused on integrating Power BI with the other Fabric experiences.
