SQL Server 2016 includes R Services, a built-in analytics service that executes R language scripts. The R language is an open source statistical programming language with a large library of free code for statistical, analytic, and machine learning capabilities. R Services allows organizations to perform analysis on a variety of data sources and incorporate R processes in SQL Server applications and business intelligence workloads. The service can also execute R scripts on large data sets faster than most third-party R solutions. However, the service may require new hardware, and R will require new programming skills for SQL Server developers.

The R Language

Highly trained analysts and data scientists develop R scripts for predictive modeling that include a combination of historical, calculated, and estimated data variables. Typical R predictive models include long-range sales forecast models, weather pattern predictions, equipment failure-rate analysis, and biopharmaceutical risk analysis.
