SQL Server 2016, available for preview in mid-2015, is expected to include database engine improvements and new functionality to address performance, cost, and security. Improvements to in-memory technology should increase large database performance and provide options for storing historical data in the cloud, which may help reduce on-premises capital expenditures. Encryption updates could help organizations protect data in motion. Business intelligence (BI) updates include new built-in analytics workloads, cross-platform mobile tools for access to on-premises data, and a general updating of traditional SQL Server services. Some features will require an Azure subscription, and preview features are likely to change prior to release.
