  • SQL Server 2019 expands PolyBase to access more data sources, providing real-time data virtualization of non-SQL Server data sources.
  • Data virtualization, as compared to traditional ETL deployments, simplifies data connections and reduces maintenance and storage costs.
  • Deployments often require new hardware and maintenance, and some workloads can put extra work on existing servers that may need upgrades.

PolyBase is a built-in SQL Server database feature that simplifies access to external data sources to provide real-time queries, a process called data virtualization. The features support a new trend in the industry that takes advantage of high-performance hardware and advanced analytic tools to create applications normally support by traditional extract, transform, and load (ETL) and data warehouse deployments. However, data virtualization requires new deployment techniques and management; consequently, it may not provide benefit unless real-time access to external data is needed.
