Analyst ReportSQL Server 2022: First Glimpse Highlights Azure
- SQL Server 2022 can leverage Azure for disaster recovery and analytics and improves performance and security on-premises.
- Microsoft’s investment in Azure-connected features means there are fewer improvements to the core product than normal.
- This marks the beginning of preview, so more information on licensing, servicing, and additional features are expected in early 2022.
The next SQL Server version, called 2022, was announced in Nov. 2021. It is promoted as the most “Azure-enabled” version ever, with integration to Azure services providing new failover and analytic features. However, the new version also adds value for on-premises customers who do not use Azure. It includes performance, security, and programming updates to the core database engine that are not dependent on Azure, and none of the Azure-connected features replace on-premises capabilities. Customers should expect a public preview in early 2022 with general availability likely in mid-2022.
