  • SQL Server 2025 reached general availability in Nov. 2025 and offers compelling changes that should be evaluated.
  • It brings a long support window and new features that address modern AI and security demands.
  • Upgrading is not mandatory, so customers should only migrate existing databases if there are justifiable benefits
  • Some features require an edition change or new programming that may necessitate significant rework

SQL Server 2025 maintains its traditional feature set and long-term servicing, which means it should be used for new database projects, and also offers compelling benefits for many upgrade scenarios. Key improvements include enhanced performance that can offset new hardware purchases, natural language search, and stronger security features for new compliance requirements. Additionally, rule changes for Standard edition can help reduce costs in some scenarios and add access to Power BI technology. However, several retirements will preclude organizations from migrating to SQL Server 2025 without significant rework.
