A new edition of Windows is now available for use with small, embedded, network-connected devices sometimes referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT). Windows 10 IoT Core is the version of Windows 10 intended for development of embedded or dedicated-purpose devices. It can be used on devices based on Raspberry Pi 2 (Broadcom ARM) and MinnowBoard Max (Intel Atom) open hardware platforms. (Microsoft has discontinued support for the Intel Galileo board.) The Windows 10 IoT Core platform is designed to run Universal Windows Platform (UWP) applications, often referred to as Universal Apps, and the OS cannot display traditional Win32 console applications. (This can cause confusion with IT professionals familiar with Windows Server Core, the command-line-only install mode of Windows Server.) Windows 10 IoT Core devices, like any other device, can obligate organizations to cover them with device Client Access Licenses (CALs) for servers that they communicate with, such as Windows Server Active Directory Domain Services or SQL Server (licensed server + CAL), unless adequate user CALs are available for every possible end user of the device.
