Analyst ReportWindows 7, Server 2008 R2 SP1 RC
Two Nov. 2010 releases point to availability of important Windows and Internet Explorer (IE) updates in the first quarter of 2011. As part of its Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in late Oct. 2010, Microsoft provided a release candidate for a first service pack for both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, and a platform preview 6 for IE9.
SP1 includes a rollup of previously released security updates—fixes for nonsecurity bugs. It also delivers new features, such as RemoteFX to improve performance of graphic applications running in virtual machines, and dynamic memory, which allows the memory allocated to a virtual machine to be adjusted on the fly.
IE9 features a streamlined user interface and can take advantage of full hardware acceleration when rendering Web pages.
SP1 can be downloaded at www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/sp1.aspx.
IE9 can be downloaded at ie.microsoft.com/testdrive.
RemoteFX is described in “RemoteFX Expands Desktop Virtualization” on page 3 of the Oct. 2010 Update.
