RoadmapOffice Online Server
Office Online Server is software for use on-premises, providing browser-based viewing and limited editing of Excel, PowerPoint, and Word documents and OneNote notebooks. Previously called Office Web Apps, Office Online Server provides functionality similar to that offered in the Microsoft-hosted Office Online service. Office Online Server is required to enable certain features of the supported versions of SharePoint Server, Exchange Server, Dynamics 365 Server, Dynamics 365 for Operations Server, and Skype for Business Server.
Servicing and Support
Microsoft supports only the newest version of Office Online Server, with no support policy offered for older releases as of the day the next version is released: Previous builds should continue to function, but any hotfixes will require customers to upgrade to the current release. However, the last full release of the software was in Nov. 2018. Security updates are released monthly, with feature updates arriving irregularly, as often as twice per year, via a cumulative update (CU).
