Azure Data Factory (ADF) is a cloud extract, transform, and load (ETL) service that helps automate data integration and transformation from on-premises, third-party database services and Azure-hosted data services.

Product: Azure Data Factory

Upcoming changes to the service in the near and long term include:

Near Term (2024–2025)

Recent updates to the service include ADF Workflow Orchestration Manager, which is based on Apache Airflow.

Microsoft’s focus on Fabric has redirected investments from ADF to Fabric Data Factory. The company provides migration tools and guidance to help customers migrate from ADF to Fabric Data Factory.

Long Term (Beyond 2025)

ADF is updated to remain compatible with SQL Server Integration Services in the latest SQL Server version and should receive updates when a new version of SQL Server arrives.

ADF’s Apache Airflow support will likely be updated for compatibility with the latest release of Airflow. Fabric Data Factory is also gaining Airflow support; it is likely to receive innovations before ADF, and some of those may never arrive in ADF.
