BizTalk Server

The BizTalk Server software is Microsoft’s most mature application integration and business-to-business commerce product. It may receive new versions; however, no new version has been announced since BizTalk Server 2020, released in Jan. 2020. Azure Logic Apps is now Microsoft’s primary integration technology.

Overview

BizTalk Server offers a workflow component (called Orchestration) for defining and executing long-running business processes (such as submitting a purchase order) and messaging components for communications between applications. It implements common Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) messaging standards and many industry-specific standards (such as HL7 for healthcare). The BizTalk Server license also covers Microsoft’s mainframe integration software, Host Integration Server, versions of which sometimes ship separately. (See “BizTalk Server Timeline.”)

BizTalk Server competes with application integration products from IBM, Oracle, TIBCO, and others and in addition mainframe integration products from Attachmate (a Microsoft partner). Its primary Microsoft competitor is Azure Logic Apps, an Azure-hosted integration service that has developed rapidly over the last several years. Logic Apps components can run as Docker containers hosted in any Kubernetes environment, including on-premises.
