  Roadmap

Configuration Manager Timeline

Configuration Manager should continue to get Current Branch releases twice a year for the foreseeable future. Microsoft’s emphasis on the Intune-hosted service clearly indicates that Configuration Manager does not have a promising future as a stand-alone product. Organizations should be deploying Current Branch releases of Configuration Manager in order to obtain the latest capabilities for co-management between Configuration Manager and Intune. Updates also regularly add features for managing the latest updates to the Windows client OS and Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise, as well as Microsoft’s Edge browser.

The accompanying timeline shows likely future versions released through the end of 2025 for the Current Branch cadence and the corresponding support retirement dates for each version. (Endpoint Protection antimalware is updated along with Configuration Manager on the same timeline and is discussed in “Security.”)

Current Branch

Current Branch releases now ship only twice per year, reduced from the prior schedule of three releases per year. The next Current Branch release of Configuration Manager (2409) should ship in Oct. 2024 and is not yet in preview, followed by an Apr. 2025 release (2503).
