Azure Database Migration Service (DMS) offers computing resources, orchestration features, assessment and testing tools, and documentation to guide customers through the process of migrating databases to Azure services. The service provides two versions, a newer DMS version used for migrating SQL Server, MySQL, and Oracle databases, and the DMS (classic) version used for MySQL and PostgreSQL databases.

Product: Database Migration Service

Near Term (2024–2025)

Microsoft currently provides two versions of the service, called simply DMS and DMS (classic). Together they support a wide range of migration scenarios to Azure, including migration from SQL Server, migrating from other relational and document database software, and migrating from one Azure database service to another. However, the services support different products, and customers may need to use both services depending on their migration requirements.

Additionally, Microsoft is focusing development of management tools through the DMS extension for Data Studio rather than the Azure portal. Data Studio is a browser-based application that can query and manage various Azure database services.
