Update Sept. 2025. The hits keep on coming with a plethora of features and improvements being released and planned. The challenge will be trying to decide which features are important and how to implement them in your environment. Also beware that the Standard tier is retiring with an auto-upgrade to the more expensive Premium tier in Oct. 2026.

Azure Databricks is an Azure cloud service based on Databricks, which is a third-party technology that provides analytics, orchestration, and collaboration tools for creating and operating advanced analytics and machine learning (ML) applications. Microsoft provides automated scaling and back-end compute and storage resources, as well as integrations to other Azure services that can be used to enhance Databricks and create a complete application environment.

Near-Term Updates and Roadmap (2025–2026)

Microsoft has a long list of release notes (general availability and preview) for its Databricks offering, highlighting Microsoft’s commitment to the service. However, many Databricks components are available in packages that customers must install separately, a common practice with Databricks. Not all packages are immediately available when released by their parent company, and most require a prerequisite Databricks Runtime.
