RoadmapDocumentDB Roadmap
Azure DocumentDB offers a highly compatible MongoDB service using the open-standard DocumentDB platform that runs on top of PostgreSQL to provide a document store underpinned by a relational database engine. (The service was previously branded Cosmos DB for MongoDB vCore).
Product: DocumentDB
Recent Updates and Near-Term Roadmap (2025–2026)
Throughout late 2024 and 2025, Microsoft has put significant effort into improving the DocumentDB service, including a rebranding (from Cosmos DB for MongoDB vCore offering) that separates it from Cosmos DB and should reduce customer confusion.
The DocumentDB service was originally released (as Cosmos DB for MongoDB vCore) for customers who preferred a native MongoDB environment where they have on-premises like controls and do not need the multimodal capabilities of the core Cosmos DB service. Released in late 2023, the service is based on VMs, provides greater isolation, a lower-cost entry point, and a more familiar option for migrating applications to Azure.
