Endpoint Protection detects and removes viruses, worms, Trojans, adware, and spyware from computers. The antivirus engine in Endpoint Protection is the same engine used by Intune, the online management and security subscription service; Windows Defender, which is built into Windows and Windows Server; and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint.

Endpoint Protection uses System Center Configuration Manager for centralized management, and the two products are updated together. In 2020, “System Center” was dropped from the product branding for these two applications, which are now simply referred to as Endpoint Protection and Configuration Manager.

Servicing and Support

Endpoint Protection follows the release schedule of Configuration Manager, which gets new Current Branch versions once per year. For more information, see the timeline section of “Configuration Manager.” It is not clear when or if customers should expect the next LTSB release of Endpoint Protection and Configuration Manager.
