Entra ID

Entra ID is a Microsoft-hosted directory service that provides identity and access management for Office 365, Intune, and most other Microsoft online services. Paid tiers of Entra ID are a part of the Enterprise Mobility + Security (EMS) and Microsoft 365 suites of hosted services. Entra ID was rebranded from Azure Active Directory in July 2023.

Capabilities and Limitations

Entra ID authenticates users, manages user account information, and offers self-service password reset and multifactor authentication (MFA).

Entra ID is organized into four tiers of service:

• Free
• Entra ID P1 (formerly AAD Premium P1)
• Entra ID P2 (formerly AAD Premium P2)
• Entra ID Governance (became generally available during the first half of 2023).

Conditional access is an extension of Entra ID P1 and higher and Intune Plan 1 and higher that can require users and their devices to pass additional security checks before users can sign into an application with their Entra ID credentials. Paid editions of Entra ID add increased capabilities for management of users, including reporting and security oversight capabilities.
