Update Oct. 2025 – Management updates and security controls take center stage with Data Engineering, as more capabilities help admins fine-tune processes, resolve issues, and lock down data.

Fabric Data Engineering provides an Apache Spark development environment where data engineers can collect, store, and process large volumes of data, either in real time or on a schedule. Developers can create and collaborate on code stored in notebooks and libraries, create and manage data lake houses, build data pipelines, and run various jobs on an ad-hoc basis, on a schedule, or on an event as part of an operational workload.

As part of Fabric, Data Engineering uses the same UI, workspaces, and data storage components as the other Fabric experiences, allowing it to participate in end-to-end workloads.

Recent Updates and Near-Term Roadmap (2025–2026)

The near-term roadmap for Data Engineering focuses mostly on security and management updates that bring the service closer to the security and management capabilities in Synapse Analytics Spark Serverless pools. However, Microsoft has decided to avoid direct .NET support and instead focus on a new Visual Studio (VS) Code extension (generally available) that allows developers to write and test code locally before moving it to the service.
