HDInsight Roadmap

Azure HDInsight is a Microsoft cloud database service based on Apache’s Hadoop open-source software framework, a popular solution for managing and analyzing unstructured data. It is a PaaS offering that closely resembles an on-premises environment, where the customer has control over the cluster configuration and component deployment.

Near Term (2024–2025)

Until recently, there have been relatively few updates or new features to HDInsight, other than updates to the open-source frameworks and other components. However, in Oct. 2023, Microsoft announced a public preview of HDInsight for AKS, a new deployment option that uses the Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS). This announcement indicates that demand for HDInsight is still strong, and customers prefer or need the low-level controls and on-premises-like customization of HDInsight. But it also indicates that customers want Microsoft to keep the platform current with simplified deployment through Kubernetes and to add newer frameworks that address changes in the industry.
