RoadmapSQL Data Sync Roadmap
The Azure SQL Data Sync service acts as a cloud hub for synchronizing data across multiple SQL Server databases. Azure SQL Database hosts a central master database that syncs with one or more remote databases, either in the cloud or on-premises. The service can help organizations create distributed applications where data needs to reside in local database copies to improve connection reliability and reduce latency.
Product: SQL Data Sync
Upcoming changes to the service in the near and long term include:
Near Term (2024–2025)
Azure SQL Database (the underlying hub for SQL Data Sync) supports the database engine of SQL Server 2022, so the SQL Data Sync only supports synchronizing SQL Server databases supported by SQL Server 2022, which include SQL Server 2014 and newer.
SQL Data Sync receives occasional updates as the underlying SQL Database service changes but typically nothing unique to the replication capabilities.
Long Term (Beyond 2025)
The service will likely be updated to be compatible with the next SQL Server version, which is expected to be available in late 2025 or early 2026.
