Updated Sep-2025: SQL Managed Instance is finally supporting Windows logins, removing a long-standing barrier to migrating some on-premises applications. It is also receiving natural language queries from SQL Server 2025, which could consume extra compute resources if not careful, and management updates that improve cost and security controls.

Azure SQL Managed Instance is a PaaS database management offering, based on SQL Server‘s latest database engine. This offering is designed for organizations seeking a cloud platform with the ability to control, manage, and deploy dedicated SQL Server instances as they would on-premises. Managed Instance is part of the Azure SQL brand of database services that includes Azure SQL DatabaseAzure Synapse AnalyticsAzure SQL EdgeAzure Arc-enabled SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server in Azure VMs.
