SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) is a role in SQL Server, Microsoft’s long-standing on-premises database management and business intelligence (BI) software. SSRS is used to create traditional columnar business reports using Microsoft’s Report Definition Language (RDL). SSRS features are available in two server products: SQL Server Reporting Services and Power BI Report Server. They are essentially the same product, except Power BI Report Server can also host Power BI reports (.PBIX files) and is updated on a quarterly basis to maintain compatibility with the Power BI cloud service.

Near Term (2024–2025)

In the near term, Reporting Services will not receive major updates because it is on the same release schedule as SQL Server, where a new version is expected in late 2025 or early 2026.

Reporting Services was updated in SQL Server 2022, but the updates were minimal. They include better integration with Windows narrator, security updates, bug fixes, and a new layout for the Web portal that brings it closer in line with Power BI’s design. The latest release also retired (discontinued) several features that may impact customers when the migrate reporting workloads to the version:
