Azure Data Factory is a Microsoft-hosted extract, transform, and load (ETL) service that helps developers automate data integration and transformation from on-premises, Azure-hosted, and other database services.

Organizations routinely create ETL workflows to combine data from multiple sources. For example, ETL workflows might extract data from enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management, and e-commerce systems; transform the data into a standard format; and then load the data into a data warehouse for financial and demand analysis. Developers create ETL workflows either with an ETL tool or custom programming.

Data Factory offers quick deployment, scalability, and global reach and provides a locally deployed gateway component to support hybrid configurations.

Data Factory has two design and deployment configurations: Native mode and SQL Server Integration Services mode.

Native Mode

Native mode uses proprietary components and connectors to create ETL workflow pipelines. Native mode will appeal to customers who want a low-code ETL tool or are using other Azure data management services, such as HDInsight, Data Lake, Databricks, and Cosmos DB.
