Azure SQL Database, a multitenant relational database management service hosted in Azure, provides a variety of deployment and purchasing models and performance tiers. Choosing the right combination involves comparing each database application against the size, capacity, and feature limitations.

The following are example scenarios of the decisions required to accommodate applications migrating to SQL Database:

A solitary database for a departmental application requires special collation settings to accommodate foreign language users, which means only the SQL Database Managed Instance deployment model will work.

Migrating a SQL Server farm of 40+ small SQL Server instances can be accomplished by consolidating all instances into a single Managed Instance General Purpose deployment or without consolidation into a General Purpose Instance Pool deployment. The cost benefit is the same, but the ability to lift and shift the databases to Azure without modification is preferred, so the Instance Pool deployment is selected.
