Dynamics 365 for Unified Operations is Microsoft’s enterprise resource planning (ERP) product aimed at multinational midmarket companies and enterprises. Previously called Dynamics AX, it was renamed Unified Operations in June 2017.

It is available online as a Microsoft-hosted service and on-premises as a traditional server product. It currently contains the following major components, which are also part of the packaging structure:

  • Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations
  • Dynamics 365 for Retail
  • Dynamics 365 for Talent.

Unified Operations is sold worldwide and is designed for large organizations with more than 250 ERP users. The product has significantly expanded the range of industries and business processes that it targets: it includes industry-specific capabilities for manufacturing, distribution, retail, professional services (such as consulting), and the public sector. Its major competitors are products and services from Oracle and SAP, although some major customers have adopted Unified Operations for specific functions alongside incumbent financial solutions.
