The .NET initiative was the shared vision of many architects and executives across Microsoft. Some of the initiative’s most visible proponents included the following:

Anders Hejlsberg. The principal architect of the C# programming language, which in turn shaped much of the design of the .NET Framework and Visual Studio .NET, Hejlsberg was an important spokesman to developers when the platform was rolled out in Oct. 2000. He still holds the title of distinguished engineer in the company’s Developer Tools Division.

Mark Lucovsky. An early architect of Windows NT, Lucovsky became the principal designer and a major proponent of the .NET My Services. Lucovsky now is a distinguished engineer in the Office Data and Business Intelligence unit, which is responsible for the Excel, Access, and Data Analyzer database client products.

Paul Maritz. Head of Microsoft’s developer and platform strategy when the .NET initiative was announced, Maritz was a major advocate of both the Web services vision and the .NET platform. He announced his retirement from the company in Sept. 2000, although he continued to consult for the company for some time after.
