Project Online is a subscription service, part of Office 365, that provides organizations with multiuser access to project management and project portfolio management features. The service is part of the Project family that includes client applications, server products, and online services. It is licensed under User Subscription Licenses (User SLs). As a software-as-a-service (SaaS) offering it is attractive to organizations that prefer to have Microsoft handle the acquisition and maintenance of server infrastructure, OS and application software patching, and database management.

Based on Project Server

The service is based on Project Server and requires the use of SharePoint Online, similar to Project Server requiring SharePoint Server on-premises. The SharePoint Online tenancy can be part of an existing Office 365 tenancy, which provides single-sign-on and integration with other Office 365 services, or it can be provisioned separately to support a Project Online deployment. The base tenancy and storage are included with one or more user subscriptions.
