SharePoint Server’s future is squarely focused on SharePoint Server Subscription Edition (SE), which is the latest version and is offered solely as an evergreen, “versionless” product. SE has no end-of-support date, and customers must stay current with updates and maintain Software Assurance (SA). The previous versions (2016 and 2019) will both reach end-of-support at the same time in July 2026, leaving SE as the only supported version.

SharePoint Server SE remains compatible with Microsoft 365 and related software such as Windows Server but will be of most interest to customers with specific data governance needs (or legacy APIs not available in SharePoint Online) who require an on-premises deployment and who do not need the SharePoint Online features that are excluded from the on-premises version, such as Microsoft 365 Groups integration, Entra ID integration, and support for hub sites. (For a timeline of events, see the illustration “SharePoint Online and Server Timelines (as of Feb. 2025)”.)
