WCF Data Services, a data access technology delivered in the .NET Framework 4, is a renamed and updated version of the former ADO.NET Data Services. With WCF Data Services, developers can build server applications that make databases and other data sources accessible as feeds over the Web using Atom, a standard developed for blogging and Web content syndication that is now being used for other types of data access. Atom feeds are an attractive way to access data sources because they work well with many Web development technologies (such as Silverlight and client-side JavaScript). Several upcoming Microsoft technologies will use or host feeds compatible with WCF Data Services, including SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services, SharePoint 2010, the SQL Azure hosted database service, and the PowerPivot analytic plug-in for Excel 2010 and SharePoint 2010.
