Major developments in Microsoft’s database, application development, and Web products since the Apr. 2015 Enterprise Software Roadmap include the following:
- SQL Server 2014 received its first service pack, which contains a rollup of bug fixes and minor enhancements.
- SQL Server 2016 is expected to reach public preview in mid-2015 and will include performance boosts, hybrid cloud storage options, security updates for data in motion, built-in analytics with R language processing, and update BI functionality.
- Azure SQL Database is previewing security features to protect and mask data in motion, called Always Encrypted and Dynamic Data Masking, that will also be released in SQL Server 2016.
- Prior Azure SQL Database offerings (Web and Business) are retired.
- The Power BI preview continues to receive updates that include new report design tools and an updated Web portal that removes the reliance on Excel.
- Visual Studio 2015 release candidate became available in Apr. 2015.
