  • Azure Arc enabled data services offers select Azure PaaS database services on-premises, in third-party clouds, and in Azure Kubernetes Services.
  • It is designed for customers who prefer a managed service but need greater control of database infrastructure for performance or regulatory needs.
  • It addresses database size limits of the cloud services and offers consistent management for deployments across Azure, on-premises, and in other clouds.
  • It can also help reduce cost through better scaling and license usage than SQL Server or Azure SQL Managed Instance.

Azure Arc enabled data services is a set of technologies that allows customers to deploy Azure SQL Managed Instance and Azure Database Services for PostgreSQL instances, on-premises, on non-Azure clouds, or in Kubernetes clusters on Azure. Arc enabled data services provide traditional PaaS features with simplified deployment and scaling, and access to Azure security and management features. Instances can be connected to Azure (through Arc) to provide automated updates and management, or they can be disconnected from Azure to protect critical data and help meet compliance requirements. The features require new deployment methods, Kubernetes clusters, and separate costs for infrastructure and storage.
