- Database for PostgreSQL Hyperscale has been rebranded as Cosmos DB for PostgreSQL with minimal impact to applications.
- The new service enables Hyperscale deployments to use Cosmos DB’s scaling, replication, and backup capabilities.
- Existing deployments are being migrated automatically, which will break build processes and administrative scripts.
- The new service does not provide integrated security, data sharing, and SLAs found in other Cosmos DB offerings.
Azure Database for PostgreSQL Hyperscale has been rebranded as Azure Cosmos DB for PostgreSQL in a surprise Nov. 2022 announcement. Existing databases are being automatically migrated to Cosmos DB by early 2023 to take advantage of Cosmos DB’s scaling, distribution, and management features, which are better suited for scale-out databases. The move to Cosmos DB has little impact on existing Hyperscale databases, as the new service retains the same capabilities as before and applications continue to access databases through existing connection strings. However, administrators need to immediately change management and monitoring processes and modify scripts to use Cosmos DB’s methods for scaling and distribution.
