SQL Server 2022: Incremental Performance Updates

Performance improvements delivered with SQL Server 2022 (expected in late 2022) focus primarily on incremental enhancements to automated query tuning and updates to the core engine that help it perform better with newer, large hardware. Unlike many other updates in SQL Server 2022, none of the performance updates rely on or integrate with Azure services, and all updates are available for customers with on-premises deployments.

Automated Query Tuning

Capabilities provided by automated query tuning benefit administrators by speeding analysis and adjustment across a large inventory of databases without human intervention. The features are provided via Query Store and the Intelligent Query Processing suite, components introduced in SQL Server 2016 and 2017, respectively. These components monitor query performance to optimize query plans and help diagnose query problems. They can automatically implement improvements, such as adjusting query plans or adding indexes, and then monitor the success of the adjustments and roll back changes that are unsuccessful.
