Analyst ReportAzure PostgreSQL to Support Streaming Replication
- Azure Database for PostgreSQL is adding a native database replication technique called physical replication, which streams data changes to read-only replicas.
- It can help reduce cost by offloading BI workloads to replicas and enables Azure migration for existing applications that require physical replication.
- The service automates the creation of VMs and replicas and management of the replication process, removing significant administrative overhead.
Azure Database for PostgreSQL is a PaaS offering that provides current community editions of the open source database software as a managed service. It includes access to the underlying server like on-premises configurations while delivering built-in high availability, automated backups and advanced security. The current preview of PostgreSQL’s physical replication technology continues Microsoft’s investment in the open source platform and adds an option for customers to deploy read-only database replicas that mimic those used in on-premises architectures. The replicas use the native PostgreSQL database engine that offers full compatibility, but they also suffer from the same potential data lags experienced on-premises.
