Analyst ReportAzure PostgreSQL, MySQL Receive Enterprise Updates
- Azure Database for PostgreSQL and MySQL receive more native capabilities to help with app compatibility and migration.
- Enterprise features, integration with other Azure services, and continued investments highlight Microsoft’s commitment.
- MariaDB versions are aging, and the service will retire in May 2023 unless Microsoft releases a new version.
Azure Database Services for PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB provide supported community editions of the open source products running in Azure data centers, as alternatives to Microsoft’s SQL Server product. The services have reached their third anniversary of general availability, and Microsoft continues to invest heavily in two of the offerings: PostgreSQL and MySQL. This support typically indicates that Microsoft sees the services as successful and will continue to support and improve them, which means customers should feel comfortable including them in their overall architecture and plans. However, the MariaDB service has stalled. Microsoft has not adopted the last three community edition releases, which could indicate that Microsoft is planning to retire the service, although no formal statements have been released.
