  • Azure DocumentDB (previously called Cosmos DB for MongoDB vCore), has matured to the point where it is usable for most applications and is reinforced with its separation from Cosmos DB.
  • Future enhancements include connections to other Azure services, new entry tiers, and improved security options that address many previous enterprise shortcomings.
  • Microsoft’s acknowledgement of DocumentDB’s independence and continuing investment should give assurance to new adopters.

Azure DocumentDB — rebranded from Cosmos DB for MongoDB vCore — is now a reliable, enterprise-level cloud database service that can take advantage of Azure’s scale and security and deliver on the promise of hybrid deployments using on-premises and multi-cloud databases. The separation from Cosmos DB reduces confusion and recent improvements make it easier and safer for organizations to adopt, offering better cost control, enhanced security, and greater flexibility. The DocumentDB roadmap and Microsoft’s ongoing investment offers greater assurance to its longevity, giving customers confidence to migrate and modernize applications with less risk.
