Azure Database for PostgreSQL, a managed service for hosting PostgreSQL databases, has released a high-end option called Hyperscale that will be attractive for customers with high-end and compute-intensive applications, such as large databases (over 100GB) supporting online e-commerce. PostgreSQL is an open source, relational database management system (RDBMS). The Azure Database service is maintained by Microsoft, which allows developers to quickly deploy and scale environments, and it includes high availability and other advanced features. The Hyperscale capabilities are derived from technology acquired from Citus Data, a provider of PostgreSQL extensions. Hyperscale automates scale-out deployments of PostgreSQL and coordinates the distribution of data and queries across multiple computers (called nodes) to dramatically improve performance. Hyperscale is an extension of PostgreSQL, which reduces the need to rearchitect and modify databases and applications; however, databases are limited to 2TB in size and developers must determine the number and size (virtual cores and storage) of nodes and establish a data distribution pattern that best fits their application. Migrating to Hyperscale requires redeploying databases and ensuring compatibility with PostgreSQL version 11. Database services are discussed in the Azure Roadmap at https://www.directionsonmicrosoft.com/roadmap/ref/database-services-postgresql-mysql-mariadb.
