Azure Cosmos DB is a brand that coverered three distinct NoSQL deployment options. The original core service is a multimodal database offering that supports multiple data formats and open-source languages, allowing developers to work with several different data types in the same service while sharing security settings and replication features across types. The other two offerings, Cosmos DB for MongoDB vCore (now called Azure DocumentDB) and Cosmos DB for PostgreSQL, provide native, on-premises offerings that work independently of the Cosmos DB core service.

Recent Updates and Near-Term Roadmap (2025–2026)

Throughout late 2024 and 2025, Microsoft has put significant effort into improving the core Cosmos DB service, which indicates that it is receiving sufficient adoption levels to justify the investment. By contrast, Cosmos DB for PostgreSQL has received no significant updates in the last 12 months.

Cosmos DB for MongoDB vCore Changes its Name

The Cosmos DB for MongoDB vCore offering was rebranded Azure DocumentDB in Nov. 2025.
